Suicide & Self-Harm Prevention Protocol

Soula maintains the following protocol for preventing the production of suicidal ideation, suicide, or self-harm content:

Detection. Soula’s AI system is designed to identify expressions of suicidal ideation, suicide, or self-harm in user conversations. When such expressions are detected, the system is configured to avoid generating content that could encourage, validate, or reinforce suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors.

Crisis Referral. When a user expresses suicidal ideation, suicide, or self-harm, Soula provides a notification referring the user to crisis service providers, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741).

Content Safeguards. Soula’s system includes safeguards designed to prevent the AI from producing responses that contain instructions, encouragement, or detailed content related to methods of self-harm or suicide.

Limitations. Soula is an AI application and has inherent limitations. Its detection systems are not infallible and may not identify all expressions of distress. Soula is not a substitute for professional mental health care, crisis intervention, or emergency services. Users experiencing a mental health crisis should contact the resources listed above.
